With the creation of Montpellier BIC in 1987, Montpellier Métropole took a bold step toward innovative entrepreneurship by welcoming digital pioneers. Today, the metropolitan authority it is working to meet the challenge of sustainable and responsible digital technology in collaboration with all economic stakeholders in the sector.
Montpellier has unique assets to achieve its goals:
- A supercomputer: Adastra, hosted at CINES and ranked 3rd on the Green 500. (Architecture: EHPE-Cray EX4000 - 74 Pflops.)
- An association dedicated to AI professionals: Montpellier Méditerranée AI, bringing together the Montpellier University Hospital (CHU), University of Montpellier, Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée Region, Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, and digital clusters.

Montpellier Institute of Data Science
ISDM-MESO is a mesocenter open to public and private stakeholders. As a center of expertise for research, it offers shared resources and state-of-the-art architectures dedicated to high-performance computing (HPC), massive data storage and processing, and the Cloud. The mesocenter’s technical resources are hosted at CINES.
Adastra - FRANCE’S FIRST SUPERCOMPUTER
Based in Montpellier, this supercomputer is one of the fastest in Europe. It enables extremely complex calculations to be performed in just a few seconds, helping to advance research in health, meteorology, and artificial intelligence. Hosted at the National Higher Education Computing Center (CINES) in Montpellier, Adastra performs 74 million billion calculations per second, or 74 petaflops/s.

There are approximately 30 higher education institutions in the greater Montpellier metropolitan area.
These institutions are directly linked to careers in the digital sector, training more than 3,000 people annually through initial and ongoing education programs. The area also has around ten institutions specializing in digital communication, digital marketing, and management related to digital transformation.
